MorsettoMIDI

Your notes. A new rhythmic voice.

MorsettoMIDI

MorsettoMIDI turns short text into rhythmic articulation for the notes you play. Hold a chord and let it breathe through expression, or give each mark a fresh attack. Change your harmony while the rhythm keeps its place in the song.

Your performance supplies the pitches. Your instrument supplies the sound. MorsettoMIDI shapes the movement between them.

Start with the complete MORSE pattern for free, with all MIDI mappings and shaping controls. Pro unlocks your own text, spacing and loops.

Coming soon for iPhone, iPad and Mac as an AUv3 MIDI processor. Requires a host with compatible MIDI routing and a receiving instrument.

Give your playing a different pulse

  • Write the rhythmic idea

Choose a Morse-unit duration from 1/64 to a whole note, with optional triplets. Pro turns your own words into the structure for your performance.

    Free
The complete MORSE pattern, with unlimited use.
    Pro
Your own text, up to 20 supported characters.
  • Keep your harmony in your hands

Supply notes from a keyboard or host MIDI track. Incoming pitches and playing dynamics remain the starting point while the pattern follows your host’s tempo and position.

    Free & Pro
Played-note routing and velocity response curves.
  • Sustain with expression

Let held notes continue while the pattern shapes their expression. Add notes without waiting for the next Morse attack, making space for evolving chords without repeating every instrument attack.

    Free & Pro
    Sustain articulation and expression mapping.
  • Retrigger the gesture

Trigger eligible held notes at each Morse attack. Newly played notes enter at the next attack, and sustain-pedal holding can keep notes available for the pattern.

    Free & Pro
    Retrigger articulation and sustain-pedal handling.
  • Connect the right kind of movement

Send the full Morse envelope, dots, dashes or a loop ramp to assignable MIDI controllers or polyphonic pressure. Set each mapping’s range, direction and response to incoming values.

    Free & Pro
Four continuous mappings with sources, ranges and scaling.
  • Find the space between notes

Give the phrase room to breathe, move its loop region and refine the transitions. Save settings with your host and automate the six Shape controls in either tier.

    Free
Original spacing, the full MORSE loop and all shaping controls.
    Pro
Leading silence, character spacing and loop authoring.

Two ways to play the same phrase

With Sustain, your note attacks come from your playing. The pattern moves the expression of those held notes, which can suit long pads, strings and evolving textures.

With Retrigger, each mark can start held notes again. The receiving instrument’s envelope makes those attacks part of the rhythm, opening up more percussive articulations.

Choose Sustain or Retrigger with the dedicated articulation selector. It stays independent of the velocity and continuous mappings: disabling those mappings does not turn Retrigger off. Separate marks remain separate retriggers even when their edges touch. Changing chords does not restart the rhythmic phrase.

Expression that suits your instrument

Five permanent tabs hold Velocity and four continuous mappings. Each continuous mapping can use Morse Envelope, Dots only, Dashes only or Loop Ramp. Select a tab to edit its settings; use Active Mapping to enable it independently of the other tabs.

The initial MORSE pattern uses CC11 Expression. The other continuous slots start with CC1 Modulation, CC74 Brightness and CC7 Channel Volume, ready to enable. Choose another assignable controller or Polyphonic Pressure, drag the range graph’s endpoints and invert its direction. Active CC destinations must be distinct, with at most one active pressure mapping.

Absolute Range follows your authored range at full Depth. Scale Input multiplies that movement by the incoming value; it is the initial CC11 setting. When a controller mapping releases its destination, it restores the latest incoming value, or a destination-specific fallback if no value has arrived.

Controller messages affect the receiving MIDI channel; polyphonic pressure addresses individual notes. The audible result depends on the instrument and its assignments. Full MPE support is outside the first release.

Velocity shaping stays separate from continuous expression. Choose Played velocity or Fixed velocity for incoming notes, then keep a linear response, lift softer notes or emphasize stronger ones. Fixed velocity still uses the pitches you play.

A phrase you can reshape

With Pro, apply up to 20 supported characters, add leading silence and adjust the gaps between characters. Use free placement or snapping to Morse ticks and host beats, then select a loop or move the whole region with its labelled duration strip. Timing, triplets, grid choices and zoom remain available in Free.

Balance, Attack, A. Offset, Release, R. Offset and Depth shape the Morse treatment. Reshape Overlaps can shorten overlapping fades to preserve complete pulses. Loop Ramp keeps its own rising shape. Controls with no role in the current routing stay visible but inactive, with their settings retained.

Set up your first performance

  1. Choose the route. Load MorsettoMIDI in a host that supports AUv3 MIDI processors and route its output to an instrument.
  2. Send your notes. Connect a keyboard or play a MIDI region into MorsettoMIDI. Select a receiving patch that responds to CC11 Expression for the initial setup.
  3. Start the host and play. Hold notes or chords, listen to the pattern, then explore Sustain, Retrigger and expression mappings.

The receiving instrument makes the sound. Recording the resulting audio or MIDI uses the facilities available in your host.

Free and Pro

Free includes unlimited MORSE processing, Sustain and Retrigger, velocity curves, configurable expression, shaping, subdivision/triplets, host automation and saving. Its text, original spacing and complete natural loop remain fixed.

MorsettoMIDI Pro is an optional one-time purchase for custom text, spacing, leading silence and loop authoring. Buy or restore it in the MorsettoMIDI app, then choose Refresh Pro in the plug-in if needed. MorsettoAudio Pro is a separate purchase.

Opening and re-saving a Pro project without Pro access preserves the custom pattern, while current playback uses MORSE. Restore access to use the saved custom material again.

Compatibility and availability

The current system baseline is iOS/iPadOS 18 or later and macOS 15 or later. The host must support AUv3 MIDI processing, route its output to an instrument and supply tempo, beat position and moving transport. Incoming notes or MIDI clock alone do not start the pattern.

Ableton documents no direct MIDI output from AU plugins and recommends VST for that workflow. This is a Live limitation, not a general AUv3 limitation: Apple explicitly provides AU MIDI-output APIs.
